It was the same model which reignited that legacy with stunning reissues back in 1968.

The Gibson Les Paul had been phased out in 1960 in favour of the new, contoured, lightweight Gibson SG, however, the mid 60s saw a resurgence of this older model. Players like Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield and Keith Richards, to name a few, favoured the looks, sound and feel of the original Les Paul design. This sparked consumer demand, and by 1968 Gibson answered that demand with their first ever reissue. As a tribute to Lester and the original Gibson Les Paul design, the 68 reissue featured a Goldtop and P90 pickups. Over the next few years the Les Paul received some changes. The headstock grew bigger, a neck volute - added material at the base of the headstock for structural reinforcement was added, the body received a “pancake” type construction - sandwiching a thin sheet of maple between two pieces of mahogany, and mini hum buckers were installed in replacement of the original P90 pickups. The original P90 rout was retained and a modified p90 cover served as the pickup ring for the mini hum bucker. And so it goes - the Gibson Les Paul Deluxe was born.

This example comes from 1974. Body wise it is quite original, with original finish, frets and most of the hardware. The pickups and wiring hardness have been replaced, however originals mini humbuckers come with the guitar. In 1974 mini humbuckers began receiving a stamped patent number on the pickup base. This guitar has one stamped humbucker and one patent sticker humbucker. The coils are both the same orange enamel wire and clear bobbins. The patent stamp wire appears to have had work done at some stage as evidenced by heat shrink wrap at the lead bass and resolder marks where the base plate is attached to the pickup cover.

The pickup rings are fixed in place with a small amount of glue and would likely need to be separated from the body using a razor blade in order to remove the pickups. The tuners have been replaced as evidenced by the original footprint and screw holes on the back of the headstock. As evidenced in the headstock photos, this has at some stage suffered the oh so common fate of Gibson Les Pauls - a headstock break. The break appears to have been relatively clean and the repair is strong.

All things considered, this guitar is in excellent condition for its age. The paintwork is excellent with minimal marks, wear or even much yellowing of the finish - a well preserved closet classic.

The pickups on this guitar are Tuxedo Noiseless mini p90s from Australian pickup manufacturer Mr Fabulous Guitars. They have a bright sound, with rich overtones and silent operation. The wiring harness is from Emerson audio with vintage style bumble bee capacitors. The neck of this Lester is relatively slim compared to many 1950s Gibson necks. The wide C profile and 43.2mm nut width. The original frets are low and wide with minimal wear. The fret nibs are not as pronounced on this guitar compared to newer reissues, which is typical of this era Les Paul.

This is a super clean classic Les Paul Deluxe that sounds fantastic, looks amazing and plays wonderfully. Toted by all three pickers of the Beatles, as well as Keith Richards and a whole host of others, the Epiphone Casino can be heard on many of the most iconic songs of the 1960s.

The first A7 chord strummed on this guitar transports you back to Abby Road. The earthy snarl of the fully hollow body with warm, nickel covered P90 tone conjures up that sound that is instantly familiar. It is almost surprising how much of that classic Beatles tone is held in these mid 60s Epiphones.

This guitar is set up well and is a joy to play. The neck is on the slimmer side at 1 5/8ths nut width. With nice straight neck, low action and smooth frets with minimal pitting this guitar is very easy on the hands.

This Epiphone Casino appears to have all original wiring, pickups and potentiometers. On 3 of the pots the date code is obscured by solder, but the last pot reveals a date of 1964. On account of the longer headstock, this places the build of this guitar in late ’64 or possibly early ’65. Earlier 65 instruments typically have a 1 11/16ths nut width, while later ones typically have a 1 9/16ths nut width. This guitar has a nut width of 1 5/8” which is smack dab in between the two nut widths. Necks on these mid 60s Epiphones often had an approximate 1/16ths variance from one guitar to the next.

This guitar received a refret sometime in the 1980s. The fret thickness is .080" versus the standard 0.100 at the time. At this stage the guitar received a graphite nut and mahogany binding, replacing the white plastic up the sides of the neck. The original white binding is still in place at the end of the fretboard. The back of the neck was then oversprayed, ending at the body and base of the headstock.

This guitar sports nickel P90 covers, and an original white scratch plate with the plain metallic pre 1966 “E” decal.

Interestingly, the Trem O Tone tailpiece sports the ’66 and later raised plastic “E” logo. It is also chrome, rather than nickel. These attributes show that it is slightly newer than the rest of the guitar. The transition was made from nickel to chrome in ’65. Underneath the tailpiece there are two extra screw holes which appear to be from the original trapeze tailpiece. The original tremolo arm and clamp are not with this guitar.

This style of vibrato tailpiece did come as standard on this model of Casino, and its fitment was done very early on. Possibly even before its initial sale. The original tuners have been replaced with contemporary Schaller tuners. The original case is also no longer with the guitar and has been replaced with a modern Epiphone case.

The original bridge with nylon saddles has been replaced with a newer Gotoh bridge, sitting on the original posts and thumbwheels. The 21st fret inlay has been replaced at some stage.

Recently the original Gibson ABR-1 bridge was recovered by the owner and will be included in the sale. It has 4 original screws and 4 of the original nylon saddles.

There is no significant damage to this guitar. The paint is in great shape throughout with no signs of touch up or repair. There is light patina and checking on the headstock and subtle checking on the body. There are some small bumps and nicks to the finish as evidenced in photos, but, over all is in great shape.

Despite several modifications, this is a very clean example of one of the most recorded guitars of the 60s and a model that holds a high ranking in the history rock and roll. The output jack has also been replaced. The back of the neck has been professionally oversprayed some decades ago, likely at the time of its frets being replaced. This instrument combines a rare 1964 “L Series” Jazz bass neck with Brazilian rosewood fretboard with a solid and well functioning 1971 Fender Jazz bass body. The end result is a killer player grade vintage bass with a whole lot of character and vintage authenticity.

This bass presents in very good condition. The durable poly finish on the body has held up well over the years, despite clear evidence of being played considerably. A 2mm groove has been worn into the front of the bass where the players thumb has rested for countless hours of playing. All the original controls and electrical components are present on the body. The three original Centralab pots all show a date of 1971. We believe these pickups have never been unsoldered from these pots. This indicates that these controls have never been removed from the instrument. This, combined with the poly finish, 11 hole guard, absence of paint nail holes, and the style of burst finish, point to the body as being from 1971.

The coolest part of this bass is its neck. A beautiful slim and straight example of pre CBS craftsmanship. The slim “A stamped” Jazz bass neck has a nut width of 38mm and a neck depth of 20.2mm at the first fret give this instrument that slick, easy playing feel that you'd expect from an L series Jazz Bass. This bass has reproduction vintage style reverse wind tuners. The original frets have plenty of life with minimal signs of pitting. Original clay dots are present. This bass has some light pink dot marker paint on the side of the fretboard over the original side dots. This neck has received an overspray a long time ago. There are several chips on the outer layer showing a lighter nitrocellulose lacquer underneath.

This bass has a reproduction plastic tug bar with new screws. The pickguard is an old 11 hole white three ply guard (11 hole guards were introduced mid 1965), it is likely not original to this sunburst body. The bridge of this bass is also not original to this body, as the threaded saddles were phased out in 1966/67. It is possible the bridge belonged to the original 1964 body. White guards where typically available on custom colours. There is evidence of different colours inside of the chrome neck plate. At this stage the original colour is purely speculation as there is not enough evidence for us to know for sure.

A vintage bridge cover comes with this bass, it does not have the neck pickup cover.

There are several areas where the black finish has been touched up with a felt tip marker, and give of a distinct purple hue under light. This instrument started out its life as a 1962 Fender Precision bass in sunburst finish. Somewhere along the way, this instrument has experienced a comprehensive makeover, making it a truly unique, player grade vintage fretless bass. The fretless bass didn’t exist in 1962. It wasn’t, for the most part until the late 60s when fretless basses began to appear, bridging a gap between the articulation of the fretted instruments and warm expressiveness of an upright bass. In the 1970s the fretless bass craze began to emerge in a large part due to the incredible bass work of Jaco Pastorius.

This bass plays well as a fretless. The original Brazilian rosewood “slab” fretboard has been planed down for a smooth playing surface and has a 1st fret depth of 17.3mm and a nice wide nut width of 43.6mm. You can see in later pictures how thin the edges of this slab board are. There is evidence to suggest a refret was carried out at some stage after the board had been thinned out. This is shown by the unusually deep fret tangs in the upper register - going quite far into the maple neck from the mid range up to the 20th fret.

This bass was refinished in gloss polyurethane some time ago, which shows deep finish checking. Evidence of the original sunburst finish is shown in the neck pocket. The neck has a glossy headstock face with a reproduction period correct decal over the top (you can just see the footprint of the original decal, offset by about 1.5mm). The back of the neck/headstock has been buffed, as evidenced by cutting compound in the hootenanny button hole (headstock strap button). The thin neck finish has a nice vintage feel without the poly “stickiness” that some refinished basses experience. Original heal date stamp shows thicker finish with original nitro in tact around it.

The neck pocket of this bass shows the shadow of the 'mounting stick' used to paint these instruments, which began to appear in late 1962, we also have some nail holes in the treble cutaway, at the bridge and the control cavity next to the volume knob. There is no date markings in the pickup cavity, as they have been removed with the refinish.

This bass also sports a WD enterprises tortoiseshell pick guard (held in with hum bucker mount screws), replacement tug bar and an after market late 60s style bridge with brass saddles and metric grub screws. The pickup appears to be original with black bobbins, with original cloth wire, brass base and a healthy 11.07k resistance. Volume and tone pots have been replaced. Fender used “reverse wound” tuners up until approximately 1966. The tuners on this instrument have been replaced with later model, forward winding tuners.

This instrument comes with a late 1960s vintage Fender case with a chain handle.

Aside from the substantial modifications, this is still very nice, light, resonant pre CBS, Pre L series Fender Precision bass. This is a solid, structurally sound and excellent performing vintage Fender that can be had for considerably less than the majority of pre CBS, pre L Series Fender basses on the market.

This bass has had a few modifications that detract from originality, yet make this a solid player grade option. Early in this instrument’s life (we believe 1970s) this bass has received a replacement neck. Why? We don’t know. All we know is that it feels excellent - nice and straight, with a solid, slightly chunky feel to it. It has had a refret with big, fat 2.9mm jumbo frets with plenty of life in them, and a set of forward winding Fender brand tuners. These tuners were installed sometime later. The “R” trademark appeared after 1976 and these tuners occupy a slightly different footprint to the ones previously on this bass. Heavy checking on the headstock shows this is a nitro finish - which was phased out in favour of the less desirable polyurethane in 1968.

The body of this bass is very clean - in no small part contributed to by an early clear overspray. This is evidenced by very subtle signs of drip in the upper neck pocket, as well as some light scuffs on the wood that have been painted over and are smooth to the touch. Again - this was done a long time ago. Some paint scratches have on the black edges have been ‘touched up’ by permanent marker at some stage.

This bass arrived to us with an original vintage Fender black bobbin pickup which we believe to be original to this guitar. The treble side pickup bobbin was reading high resistance - this was attributed to coil corrosion and needed to be rewound. Some poor quality solder on the potentiometers and the pickup itself suggest previous failed attempts to repair this pickup. We enlisted the services of highly reputable Slider’s Pickups (who famously make pickups for Nacho Banos - world renowned guitar builder and writer of “The Black Guard” book). The coil was rewound with vintage accurate 42 gauge plain enamel wire and new foam risers. The new winding is both a visual and sonic perfect match for the original bass side of the pickup and sounds excellent.

Original pots both show manufacture dates of early 1962. Nail holes from pre 1963 painting methods are all where they should be, as well as clear pencil ’62 marking in the pickup cavity. Lack of paint stick outline in the neck pocket is also correct for this time period. Neck plate serial 74XXX is also from 1962. Comes with an early 1970s Fender case.

This is a fantastic playing, great sounding, super clean player-grade vintage ’62 Fender Precision that can be had for a great price.

Brand: Fender
Model: Precision Bass
Country: USA
Year: 1962/1968
Serial: 74XXX
Case: Vintage HSC
Body Colour: Sunburst
Neck Colour: Natural
Finish Type: Nitro
Body Material: Alder
Neck Material: Maple
Fretboard Material: Rosewood
Scale Length: 34”
Frets: 20
Fretboard Radius: 7 1/4”
Action (Low E): 3mm
Neck Profile: C
Nut Width: 41.3mm
12th Fret Width: 58mm
1st Fret Depth: 21.5mm
12th Fret Depth: 24.2mm
Pickups: Vintage - Black bobbin
Resistance: 10.6k
Electronics: Vol/Tone
Knobs: Chrome
Pick Guard: Vintage tortoiseshell
Tuners: Replacement Fender forward winding
Hardware: Chrome
Weight: 4.2kg
Mods, Repairs: Replacement neck, refret, replacement tuners, rewound treble side pickup coil, early overspray

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0572/7489/2350/files/1VintageFenderPrecisionBass1962Sunburst_4d9ad831-ddf6-462f-8d70-f92402cc1206.jpg?v=1772596443
1974-fender-bassman-and-ev-cab
Fender Bassman Bass Amp and Cab | Tolex | USA | 1975

This 1975 Fender Bassman and EV Cab combo has seen a great deal of action over the last five decades. These are controlled by a 5 way switch on the top side, and three small dials (volume, bass and treble) on the top. The hollow construction of this instrument gives decent natural acoustic projection without being plugged in. This 2017 model features two f holes and top mounted tone and volume. Later Pro models have one F hole, and volume and tone controls on the lower bout.

The acoustic sound of this instrument is pure, clear and high fidelity. While traditional acoustics struggle with feedback and pickup placement issues, the Taylor T5z Pro was designed around the pickup platform for the best possible sonic outcome. As well as having stellar acoustic tones, the bridge pickup has a bright, almost tele like twang, without the hum. The neck pickup, while also being a hum bucker, has, in the default tonal position, a clear, single coil-esque tone. This can be warmed up to make this instrument a modern hybrid jazz box.

The lightweight urban ash body and Neo-Topical Mahogany neck are finished in a subtle yet highly durable UV coated poly based finish in high gloss. It has a medium/slim neck, dot inlays and classic vintage ES-335 appointments. The guitar features chrome hardware, with aged white binding and a durable poly finish. Body and neck construction is all maple on this instrument, yielding a brighter, snappier tone than its mahogany necked counterparts.

The feel on this guitar is what makes these Tokais so beloved. The neck is laser straight with medium jumbo frets. The profile is a medium, slightly slim C and is fast and easy to play. Acoustically the guitar is bright and resonant. Guitars that are great to play tend to get played a lot, and there is evidence of that with this example.

This guitar has had its share of maintenance and repairs over the years. It has had a refret with medium jumbo frets, a replacement vintage tailpiece, replacement pick guard, an early neck reset, which has been over sprayed upon reinstallation. In the years just after WW2 it was not uncommon for Gibson to mix and match materials based on availability. This guitar has a mahogany neck, though its not uncommon to see examples of this year with a maple neck. The guitar features vintage kluson “no oil port” fully sealed tuners - which were one of the first iterations of the closed back Klusons, which began to appear in the mid 40s. This has been repaired a long time ago and is structurally sound.

Despite the repairs, the important parts of this guitar are all there. This is a solid, well maintained workhorse. There’s no feeling of frailty to the guitar and its easy to forget this is a legitimate golden age 40s Gibson archtop. There is no perceivable sinking of the top. The binding is in great shape as are the original Brazilian rosewood bridge and fretboard. With a thickness of 20.5mm at the first fret, the neck is thin enough to feel fast and comfortable for most players. The neck is straight with a good low action and a comfortable medium C profile with a reasonably wide nut width of 44.3mm. The cremona burst has aged into a beautiful amber patina. The tone of this guitar is warm and woody with nice P90 clarity. It is strung up with 11-50 flatwounds.

This guitar comes with a sturdy Hiscox hard shell case in near new condition.

This may be the perfect player grade 1940s Gibson jazz box. This is a classy instrument with tons of vintage appeal. A great vintage Gibson at a price you might never see again.

______________________________

Brand: Gibson
Model: ES-300
Country: USA
Year: 1946
Serial: N/A
Case: HSC
Body Colour: Cremona Burst
Neck Colour: Burst Early Refinish
Finish Type: Nitro
Body Material: Maple
Neck Material: Mahogany
Fretboard Material: Brazilian Rosewood
Scale Length: 25.5"
Frets: 20
Fretboard Radius: 12”
Action (Low E): 2mm
Neck Profile: Med/Thick C
Nut Width: 44.3mm
12th Fret Width: 54.1mm
1st Fret Depth: 20.5mm
12th Fret Depth: 23.3mm
Pickups: P90
Resistance: 8.85k
Electronics: Volume/Tone
Knobs: Original Clear
Pick Guard: Repro 5 ply Black
Hardware: Nickel
Weight: 2.78kg
Mods/Repairs: Crack repair along waist - treble side, early neck reset and refinish back of neck, refret, reproduction pick guard, strap button at heel

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0572/7489/2350/files/1GibsonES-300HollowBodyGuitarCremonaBurstUSA1946.jpg?v=1777013940
1999-gibson-sj-200-natural-usa
Gibson SJ-200 | Natural | USA | 1999

This Gibson SJ-200 is a fabulous looking, punchy sounding rhythm machine. Resplendent in stunning figured maple, the top tier wood selection is shown off underneath a light nitrocellulose clear finish displaying a highly figured neck, back and sides. The medium and even grained spruce spruce top has broken in well over the last 27 years, giving a big, warm and LOUD acoustic projection.

This fully acoustic instrument sounds and plays excellently. With 2.5mm action at the 12th fret, this is easy to play, with a nice straight neck and a very “medium” c profile. At near 44mm at the nut, the neck feels reasonably wide. The C-3PO has affectionately been dubbed the “Les Small” (or Less Paul?) due to its similarities and smaller body size. At 25” scale length the string feel is somewhere between the snappiness of a tele and the warmth of a Les Paul and draws comparisons with PRS style instruments. The guitar sports a Les Paul pickup configuration with a lovely set of Mick Briefly Vintage Humbuckers.

The C-3PO is constructed with all Australian timbers.
