This Gibson J-40 has all the vintage mojo you could want from a classic old Gibson acoustic. This American made, 1978 Gibson J-40 follows the same square shouldered design that the J-45s used at the time. With solid spruce top, with mahogany back and sides, this guitar produces a sweet sound with warm mid focused projection one would expect from a nicely aged vintage Gibson dreadnought.
This guitar has been maintained well over its years and is in good playable condition. At 2.8mm on the low e 12th fret, the action is a little high, however it is an easy instrument to play with the 11-52 gauge strings it is currently strung up with. The guitar is all original with no signs of finish touch up paint or repairs to the body. Somewhat unique to this model is the string through bridge. This original bridge has been re glued at one stage and reinforced with two screws either side, securing it firmly to the x bracing underneath.
The neck on this J-40 is a comfortable, slightly chunky C with 12” fretboard radius. With original frets 0.7mm height, the original Gibson “fretless wonder” moniker comes to mind. The neck is straight and there is minimal fret buzz.
This guitar comes with a soft case, however we can help you purchase a solid case if the guitar needs to be shipped. There are a some scuffs and general patina on this instrument but all in all it is a solid and appealing vintage Gibson acoustic.
