In the age of expensive relic’ed and carefully aged new guitars, what stands out more than anything is a real vintage guitar with real patina and a story to tell.
This 1971 Les Paul Deluxe has just that. A one owner guitar, purchased new in 1971, this guitar was modified shortly after purchase with a set of original 1971 Gibson “T Top” humbuckers, and then played extensively - giving this guitar all of its vintage mojo.
The sound and feel of this guitar are what makes it special. The T Top humbuckers have excellent clarity, harmonic richness and compress nicely. This guitar has sustain for days.
This guitar has all original paintwork, original frets, no neck break and is in good structural condition. The frets are low and wide and the fret nibs are in tact. At 1.7mm at the 12th fret, action is fast and flat with minimal fret buzz. At some stage this guitar has sported a set of Schaller tuners, but has since been reverted back to a new set of Klusons.
Original knobs were lost and have been replaced with like-for-like aged vintage reproductions, as with the pickup rings, pick guard, poker chip and jack plate. The original ABR-1 bridge and stop tail are in good shape, as are the electronics. The volume and tone pots sport date code for 1971.
If you’re reluctant to spring in excess of $100,000 for an original 1950s hum bucker loaded gold top, and modern relics leave you cold, then this may be the guitar you’re looking for.
